EFFECTS OF SOLIDIFICATION VARIABLES ON THE STRUCTURE OF ALUMINUM BASE ALLOYS.
Abstract
An analytic and experimental study was made of the factors influencing dendritic structure, microsegregation and porosity in aluminum-base alloys produced under various growth conditions. Apparatus designed for controlled ingot solidification was used to study (a) interrupted solidification, (b) programmed solidification, (c) unidirectional solidification, (d) solidification under vibration, (e) liquid metal feeding of solidification shrinkage, and (f) slow solidification with high local temperature gradient ('Grain Refinement Probe').
