STRESS AND STABILITY ANALYSIS OF CYLINDRICAL AND CONICAL SHELLS. VOLUME I. AN INFINITESIMAL-BUCKLING ANALYSIS FOR TRUNCATED CONICAL SHELLS SUBJECTED TO EXTERNAL PRESSURE.

Abstract

An approximate energy analysis for determining the buckling load of a thin truncated conical shell under combined axial compression and external lateral pressure is presented. Numerical examples based on the present theory are given for cones subjected to hydrostatic pressure. Calculated buckling pressures for this loading are compared with results of other analyses and of recent tests. Results of the present analysis are in close agreement with these tests and with certain of the other analyses. (Author)
