PREDICTION OF WINTER AND SUMMER CYCLONES

Abstract

This report presents results and equations for the 12-, 24-, and 36- hr prediction of cyclone displacement and change in central pressure for the Northern Hemisphere. For application of these equations to summer cyclones, the Northern Hemisphere was divided into six areas; for application to winter cyclones, only three of these areas were treated because the other three were covered previously. The technique employed features a movingcoordinate grid system for predictor tabulation, and a screening regression analysis for the derivation of the prediction equations. These equations were tested on an independent data sample and yielded results superior to climatology for all areas tested. The incorporation of 500-mb perfect prognoses as predictors appeared to have only limited success.
