TRANSDUCER CALIBRATION FACILITY AT MORRIS DAM,

Abstract

The transducer calibration facility at the NOTS Morris Dam test area, near Azusa, Calif., includes special mounting apparatus for positioning and rotating transducers under water. The facility is instrumented for the following capabilities: (1) transmitting and receiving sensitivities of transducers can be measured over the frequency range 8 cps to 150 kc; (2) directivity patterns can be plotted automatically, using a motor-driven transducer rotator and a synchronized polar recorder, over the frequency range 20 cps to 150 kc; (3) the resistive and reactive components of transducer impedance can be measured over the frequency range 20 cps to about 30 kc; at higher frequencies, the total impedance may be obtained from voltage and current measurements. With this facilityi needed types of specialized calibration information can be obtained quickly, thus facilitating development work. Basic principles and scientific background are discussed in this report, which also includes brief descriptions of methods of measurement and data forms. (Author)
