RESEARCH ON NOISE IN CROSSED-FIELD GUNS.

Abstract

Noise-figure versus frequency characteristics and correlation of other data in the previous hot testing indicated the necessity of improving VSWR characteristics. The tube was opened and window assemblies were modified; along with this the uniformity of spacing between the vanes resulted in improved VSWR characteristics. During the hot testing period a partial leak developed between the heater and the cathode; this prevented us from obtaining low-noise results. Output characteristics indicated a strong 60 c/s component resulting in large values of noise figure. Tube was opened again and a completely new gun assembly was installed in the tube. The various data obtained during this period and from the hot testing of the tube will be presented in the final report, which is now being completed. (Author)
