A SINGLE CULTURE MEDIUM FOR THE DIFFERENTIATION IDENTIFICATION OF THE GRAM-NEGATIVE, NONFERMENTATIVE BACILLI OF HOSPITAL IMPORTANCE

Abstract

The report describes a culture medium which will identify each of these five similar organisms: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacterium anitratum, Herellea vaginicola, Mima polymorpha, and Alcaligenes faecalis. In addition, it is more reliable for the identification of Ps. aeruginosa than is either of the two commercial media used for this purpose, because it is not necessary to depend on a single parameter (pyocyanine or fluorescin) for the identification when it is used. Basic differences in growth characteristics which were used in the development of the medium are outlined.
