A CLASS OF ZERO SENSITIVITY AMPLIFIERS.
Abstract
A class of amplifiers is presented which has the feature that the amplifier gain sensitivity to differential changes in the gain of the active devices can be made zero. The effect of large changes in the device gain is also studied and incorporated in the design procedure. Two methods of exploiting this capability are considered. The first provides for the design of an amplifier based on a pole-zero configuration, and permits the optimization of the gain sensitivity in the passband. The second approach is oriented to take advantage of its usefulness in microelectronic linear amplifiers. It is shown that redundancy can be utilized, so that a useful amplifier can be designed with a-priori knowledge that some of the active devices will be inoperative and that others will have a wide range of characteristics. This feature makes the configuration well suited for microelectronic applications, where a large number of nominally identical units can be fabricated economically, although some fraction of the total will be inoperative. Circuit considerations necessary for realizing a practical amplifier are considered, and a design procedure is presented for each case. (Author)
