CONCERNING THE FORMATION OF SCALE WITH STRUCTURE 6ZR02 NB205 ON ALLOYS OF ZIRCONIUM WITH NIOBIUM,

Abstract

It is shown that during oxidation of alloys Zr-25% Nb and Zr-15% Nb-10% Mo in air on their surface along with Zr02 compound 6Zr02.Nb205 will be formed, quantity of which during fairly strong oxidation at 1200C of alloy Zr-25% Nb reaches almost 100% and is close to 100% for the second alloy. Preliminary oxidation of these alloys at a temperature of 1200C at lowered pressure in oxygen and in air up to the formation of black oxide film somewhat increases their resistance to oxidation at 700C, which is not connected, however, with formation of oxide 6Zr02.Nb205. Increased stability to oxidation of alloy Zr-25% Nb at temperatures below 600C, apparently cannot be explained only by the formation of compound 6Zr02.Nb205, inasmuch as even after oxidation at 600C the content of this compound in oxide film is small.
