A NEW MODEL OF SOLAR FLARES,

Abstract

A model is proposed for solar flares, involving a slow build-up of the pre-flare configuration in which gases circulate in the chromosphere and corona. At some stage this configuration becomes unstable and the flash phase of the flare occurs. Because of the anomalously high density of the gas involved in flares, gravitational as well as magnetic patential energy is proposed as a means of energy storage.
