THE DEPENDENCE OF INTERNAL FRICTION ON SAMPLE GEOMETRY AND STRAIN AMPLITUDE.

Abstract

A study of internal friction has been conducted over a range of frequencies and for various sample geometries in order to determine the dependence of internal friction on strain distribution. The studies have been conducted for frequencies ranging from 8 to 30 kilocycles per second. When the diameter-to-length ratio of the sample is small, the internal friction appears to be independent of frequency. The introduction of an impedance discontinuity by a change of cross-sectional area in a sample results in an internal friction related to the relative particle displacement which exists across the discontinuity. Measurements of internal friction at large strain amplitudes obtained by observing the hysteresis loss directly, indicate that loss is independent of strain up to the elastic limit of the material.
