SOME MATHEMATICAL PROBLEMS ARISING IN INFORMATION RETRIEVAL FROM INVERTED FILES

Abstract

The report is concerned with certain logical and mathematical problems arising in the design and implementation of computer systems for information retrieval from inverted files. The central problem is that of minimizing computer time necessary for mechanized retrieval. Several specific problems are formulated and investigated. Partial or complete answers to some questions are given; but several other questions remain unanswered.
