Solubility and Diffusivity of Hydrocarbons and Oxygen in Fuel Cell Electrolytes
Abstract
Experimental measurements of the solubility of oxygen in KOH, H2SO4 and H3PO4 solutions, and of straight-chain, saturated hydrocarbons in phosphoric acid have been made over the full electrolyte concentration range. The diffusion coefficient of oxygen in KOH solutions at 25 deg C and in 85% H3PO4 solutions at 60 and 80 deg C are also reported. A correlation for the solubility of gases in phosphoric acid solutions has been derived by dimensional analysis, and shown to fit the measured values within the limits of experimental error. The correlation presented should enable the solubility of oxygen and hydrocarbons in 85-105% H3PO4 to be predicted with reasonable accuracy. The values of the diffusivity of oxygen in KOH have been shown to obey the theory of Ratcliff (G. A. Ratcliff and J. G. Holdcroft. Trans. Instr. Chem. Engr. (London), 41:315 (1963)). A correlation for the diffusion coefficient of gases in phosphoric acid solutions has been derived, but insufficient experimental data was obtained for a test of the correlation to be made.
