COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF PARACHUTE HARNESS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO EASE OF RELEASE

Abstract

The U. S. Navy type and the British 'quick release' type of parachute harness were tested with respect to the ease and speed of release under the following conditions: (1) On land under good conditions. (2) On land in simulated bad weather: (a) In high wind, (b) With wet hands and harness, (c) At 0 F, (d) With heavy flying mittens. (3) In the water and suspended above the water: (a) In the water, (b) Suspended 8 ft. above water, (c) In the water; life jacket inflated. (4) Using one hand: (a) Dry, (b) With wet hands and harness. Two examples of accidental jamming are discussed and the subject of accidental release is considered.
