TENSILE AND TRANSVERSE TESTING OF GRAY CAST IRON,

Abstract

The report discusses the types and causes of defects in transverse test bars. The quality of the bars was improved by using a chromium plated steel pattern, fine grained sand, horizontal ramming of the mold, and horizontal pouring followed immediately by setting the casting in the vertical position. A rapid, accurate, and inexpensive transverse testing technique was developed using an extensometer dial anchored to the testing machine ram with the dial pin in contact with a rigid reference bar. Problems encountered in judging the strength of a casting are described in a study of the effect of the size and location of tensile specimens. (Author)
