THE RELAY INTERPOLATOR, A DESCRIPTION OF ITS OPERATION,

Abstract

The Relay Interpolator is a digital-type relay calculating machine. Upon the reception of proper instructions from a control unit, it is capable of performing certain computational processes automatically and recording the numerical results on a standard teletype printer. Relay circuits are provided so that the numerical results may be translated into special codes and perforated on standard teletype tape. The primary purpose of the Relay Interpolator is to prepare tapes for the various Tape Dynamic Testers which were developed to aid in the evaluation of gun fire control equipment. This report gives a description of the mathematical operations performed by the Relay Interpolator and indicates the basic principles involved in its design. Detailed descriptions of each circuit are included in an appendix for the benefit of those working with the machine. Additional appendixes deal with the mathematics of sub-tabulation as applied to the requirements of the Tape Dynamic Testers. (Author)
