FOCUSING OF AN ELECTRON STREAM WITH RADIOFREQUENCY FIELDS,

Abstract

A cylindrical stream of electrons is focused solely by the fields of a slow electromagnetic wave. An analysis is obtained by transforming to the wave frame in which the equations of motion of electrostatic periodic focusing are valid. A second analysis is made by transforming to the electron frame and approximating the fields in order to compare fast-wave and slow-wave focusing. Several experiments are presented using a helix as the slow waveguide, and results are found to be in rough agreement with theory. (Author)
