CHARACTERISTICS OF LOCALIZED DOMAINS IN FERROELECTRIC CRYSTALS.

Abstract

The characteristics of localized domains in a-domain and c-domain single crystals of barium titanate were investigated. Experimentally, the domains have been optically observed with a polarizing microscope. The domains and the surrounding strain patterns are manifested by regions of different optical retardation. The genuine behavior of the localized domains may be understood in terms of a localized stress model. The characteristics of localized domains make them useful in optical devices such as optical gates and storage elements.
