AN F-M SWEEP INTEGRATOR FOR QUANTITATIVE RADAR DISPLAYS.

Abstract

A system which displays radar weather echoes quantitatively is described. The video signal from a logarithmic receiver is averaged in a delay line integrator to reduce its fluctuations about the mean value, and a correction is applied to compensate for the spreading of the radar beam with range. It is then quantized into ten levels and displayed on plan position or range height indicators. Both block diagrams and detailed circuit diagrams are included. Advantages of this system over earlier delay line integrators for weather echoes result from the use of frequency modulation in the delay line loop. After integration of 24 pulses, the standard deviation of the fluctuating signal is reduced to approximately 20 per cent as compared with 100 per cent for no integration at all. (Author)
