X-RAY STUDIES OF SIMPLE CRYSTALS.

Abstract

The determination of the structure of Te2O4-HNO3 was completed. A complicated network of linked Te and O atoms runs through the crystal in a pattern similar to that shown by the oxide TeO2. A study of both the high- and low-temperature forms of carbon tetrabromide was initiated in an attempt to learn more about the nature of the transition. The high-temperature form is supposed to have extensive disorder, and the x-ray diffraction pattern fades out rapidly with increasing angle. The low-temperature form has a rather large unit cell. CsI2Br. was studied. The structure was completely determined. The nearly linear I2Br(-) anion has bond lengths I-I = 2.78 and I-Br = 2.91 A, rather similar to the dimensions in the isomorphous compound CsI3. Ni(etu)4C12 was studied. Two crystal forms of this ethylenethieurea (etu) complex was prepared and studied. It is suggested that one form has the chlorine ligands in the cis configuration, the other trans.
