MODIFICATION OF THE PROPERTIES OF POLYPROPYLENE FIBERS,

Abstract

A study of the compatibility of the systems polypropylenepolystyrene showed that the positive values for the amount of contraction do not prove to be the criterion which determines the microcompatibility of crystalline polymers. The influence of the geometric dimensions of the macromolecules of the original polymers, and the different dimensions of the secondary formations with the shifting of the polymers, on the amount of contraction of the specific volume is pointed out. The fibers obtained from a mixture of isotactic crystalline polypropylene and polystyrene have satisfactory physico-mechanical properties up to the content of not more than 12% by weight of the polystyrene in the polypropylene. The energy of activation of creep increases with the increase in the content of polystyrene in the polypropylene. This is brought about by steric obstacles created by the polystyrene, which inhibit the shifting of the structures of the polypropylene. (Author)
