ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDIES OF ANTIRADIATION DRUGS. RADIATION EFFECT ON PROTEINS IN THE ABSENCE AND PRESENCE OF THESE DRUGS.

Abstract

The work deals with polarographic and other electrochemical studies of radiation protective agents containing sulfhydryl, disulfide and thiosulfonate groups. These studies were applied to the quantitative determination of sulfhydryl and disulfide compounds by argentimetric and mercurimetric amperometric titration. Using these methods, it is possible to determine the sulfhydryl groups formed in bovine plasma albumin solutions after exposure to ultra violet light. The formation of sulfhydryl groups is explained by the rupture of disulfide during irradiation, one disulfide group giving rise to one sulfhydryl group. Also the polarographic catalytic effect of radiation protective drugs and of plasma albumin solution after irradiation in the absence and presence of these drugs was studied. The splitting of disulfide upon irradiation is accompanied by changes of the viscosity, optical rotation and light absorption in the ultraviolet region. The relationship between changes of these properties and the number of broken disulfide groups was demonstrated. (Author)
