STEADY AND OSCILLATORY MOTIONS OF A DIFFERENTIALLY HEATED FLUID LOOP.

Abstract

A theoretical study is made of the motion of a closed fluid tube heated from below and cooled from above. It is found that the steady convective motion, in which warm fluid rises in one branch and cold fluid sinks in the other branch of the tube, may become unstable and growing pulsations occur in the system. The result has been obtained by a stability analysis and also verified by direct numerical time integrations on the computer GE 225. (Author)
