OSCILLATORY MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF NEARLY FREE ELECTRONS,

Abstract

Theory interpreting oscillatory magnetic properties of metals is considered. It is suggested that a proper way to investigate the problem would be to calculate the oscillatory part of the free energy of a gas of Bloch electrons in a magnetic field, but this is a mathematically intractable problem. This investigation presents a simple model formulated on the basis of some approximations which permit a relatively straight forward analytic solution. The princi pal assumption is that the metal to be described is amenable to the weak pseudopotential approximation. The oscillatory free energy can be evaluated analytically if the potential is constant normal to the periodic along the uniform magnetic field. (Author)
