PHASE SENSITIVE EDDY CURRENT TEST EQUIPMENT.

Abstract

Nondestructive test equipment was developed to detect an eddy current signal voltage and to automatically resolve it into in-phase and quadrature components. The equipment was then used to perform various tests for the determination of its applicability to hardness measurements of ferrous materials and case depth measurements of ferrous parts. Test results using the automatic phase detection technique were promising, and it is believed that practical systems can be developed for the automatic hardness testing of ferrous materials. Deficiencies in the uniformity of metallurgical characteristics of the reference materials prevented linear correlations from being achieved. Special emphasis will be placed on the procurement of specimens with the desired metallurgical characteristics during the next phase of the program. (Author)
