CONCEPTUAL SYSTEMS AND BEHAVIOR STYLES.
Abstract
Twenty-four subjects were observed under conditions in which basic concepts were either supported (confirmation) or contradicted (refutation) by a person of perceived higher status (a confederate of E). It was found that: (1) Authority-oriented persons demonstrated evasive directiveness, socially-permissible dependence, passive resistance, and strong acceptance of assigned higher status; (2) Individuals with anti-authority and negativistic dispositions were competitive, aggressively challenging, and critical, and also were less inclined than others to give unequivocal agreement; (3) Peer and friendship-centered subjects evidenced a suppression of personal confidences; and (4) Persons oriented toward information-seeking and exploratory behavior gave relatively many interpretive and clarifying responses.
