THE DETECTION OF COMPOUND MOTION.

Abstract

An analysis of the geometry of the two-target collision prediction situation, and of related research, when taken together suggested that omega, the rate of change of the relative bearing between the two targets, could be a sufficient cue for collision prediction. An abstraction of the geometric situation was used to study the ability of an observer to detect a rotational motion superimposed on a translational motion. The results indicated that omega was used as the cue for detecting this rotational component of motion. (Author)
