PROPERTIES OF RARE EARTH AND TRANSITION GROUP IONS.

Abstract

Results of research in the following areas are reported: Growth and analysis of single crystals of rare-earth gallium and rare-earth aluminum garnets, lanthanum aluminate, thorium dioxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and various fluorides; optical absorption spectra of rare-earth ions in magnetic materials; specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of dysprosium and holmium trichlorides; nuclear magnetic resonance in manganese rubidium fluoride, manganese potassium fluoride, Tb, Dy, and Ho; ENDOR of Tb(4+) and Gd(3+) in thoria; EPR pair spectra of Tb, Ho, and Dy ethyl sulfates; magneto-optic effects in semiconducting diamond; ESR of silver chloride with Fe(2+) impurities and of U2 centers in KCl:H crystals; absorption spectra of H(-) and D(-) in calcium fluoride; ENDOR of the ground state of Tm169(2+) in calcium fluoride.
