EXPERIMENTS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ANTENNA GROUND PLANES,

Abstract

Experiments to determine the effectiveness of practical antenna ground planes show that a mesh with 0.05 wavelength spacing is a good compromise between cost and effectiveness under average conditions. This figure could be radically modified should special requirements prevail or different ground conditions exist. Variation of antenna pattern due to ground moisture content is measurable, amounting to as much as several decibels. Burial of ground plane wires is not recommended since it reduces the effectiveness when used in the H.F. or higher bands. (Author)
