Development and Preliminary Validation of the Electronic Data Processing Test-63

Abstract

As a result of increasing automation of Air Force records, it is necessary to identify airmen who can be trained to handle new electronic data processing equipment. The Electronic Data Processing Test-63 (EDPT63) was developed to meet this need. The test is composed of 4 subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Figure Analogies, Number Series, and Verbal Analogies. This report covers the development and initial validation of EDPT-63 for technical courses 685X0 and 687X0. The test's effectiveness was compared to other possible predictors such as the aptitude indexes of the Airman Qualifying Examination, education, and the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). EDPT-63 was found to have substantial validity for all of the samples available. In many instances, it was the best single predictor and when its 4 subtests were optimally weighted, they yielded a substantially higher multiple correlation than all other predictors combined. The next most effective predictor was the General Aptitude Index of the Air Qualifying Examination.
