PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ULTRAPURE SOLIDS

Abstract

The research program on the preparation of ultra-pure alkali halide single crystals incorporates three interrelated steps: purification, single crystal growth, and characterization and analysis. In the preparation and study of highly perfect specimens of refractory metals, accomplishments were made in four areas: (a) procedures were developed for the growth of single crystals of niobium by the strain-anneal technique and for the study of their structure by x-ray and metallographic methods, (b) measurements were made of the rate of sintering of porosity in the grain boundaries of niobium bicrystals, (c) bicrystals were prepared for the study of the interfacial energy as a function of misorientation, (d) techniques were developed for the measurement of intergranular diffusion in the bicrystals of niobium. Studies on transition metal and intermetallic compound single crystals were concentrated in four main areas: (a) crystal growth kinetics, (b) transition metal crystal preparation, (c) crystal perfection, and (d) purity evaluation.
