IDENTIFICATION OF JOB TYPES IN THE PERSONNEL CAREER FIELD.
Abstract
A job inventory covering 11 specialties in the Personnel Career Field and consisting of 260 tasks grouped under 12 duty categories was administered by mail to 1647 airmen in 21 major commands. Incumbents of all skill levels, completed a background information sheet and rated on a 5-point scale the relative time spent on tasks. A computerized hierarchal grouping procedure applied to the time spent data was used to identify and describe 34 significant job types. Job types were found to cut across commands and to some extent across grades and AFSCs. Job types identified supported the present mechanized shredout and existing specialties in the Personnel Career Field. Task descriptions of jobs as performed by the several specialties and by groups with differing amounts of active federal service showed that the number and kinds of tasks performed and the time spent on them vary with incumbents' job type, grade, and experience.
