BASIC ATOM CHEMISTRY--SURFACE CATALYZED EXCITATION.
Abstract
An investigation was made concerning the production of excited molecules on the surface of a catalyst by recombination of atoms. It was found that catalysts such as nickel and cobalt are effective in producing excited molecules from oxygen and/or nitrogen atoms. In addition even conditioned glass or quartz surfaces frequently and unexpectedly catalyze the formation of excited molecules. Catalyzed excitation of this type was observed when oxygen atoms were present in the gas phase at a total pressure ranging from a few microns to one millimeter. In all atom studies involving reaction kinetics or spectroscopic observations at low pressures, it would appear necessary that caution be taken to assure that the roll of surface catalyst is understood for the particular case consideration.
