SHELL-MODEL DESCRIPTION OF THE EXCITATION OF HEAVY NUCLEI BY INELASTIC ELECTRON SCATTERING,

Abstract

The nuclear shell model with residual pairing and longrange forces is used to calculate angular distributions of inelastically scattered electrons exciting one-phonon E2, E3 and E4 transitions in spherical nuclei. The electron wave functions are treated by the distortedwave method. Treatment of two-phonon excitations by the direct (single excitation) process is also presented. Numerical results for scattering from Ni58 and Ni60 show good agreement with experimental cross sections for one-phonon excitations but not for two-phonon states. (Author)
