AN INVESTIGATION OF GERMANIUM DIODES OF VARIOUS GEOMETRIES AS INFRARED MODULATORS.

Abstract

Four different designs of germanium diodes were investigated to determine their capabilities to be used as infrared modulators. Only the rectangular design is capable of modulating at any usuable frequency. The remaining diodes exhibit low frequency characteristics and are quite susceptible to device operating temperatures. Reasons for these results are presented and discussed. A new design is proposed which incorporates the features of a large injection area and an optical path parallel to the p-n junction. (Author)
