LEVEL OF INTERPERSONAL EXCHANGE AS A FUNCTION OF THE EASE OF BEING GENEROUS.
Abstract
The hypotheses presented concerning interpersonal exchange were derived from Nash's mathematical model of rational bargaining: The easier it is for one member of a dyad to be generous to the other, (1) the higher costs will both incur and (2) the higher profits will both achieve. If it is easier for member H to provide rewards than for member L, (3) L will incur higher costs than H and (4) L will achieve higher profits than H. An experiment was run in which members of like-sexed pairs alternated providing rewards to one another. All four hypotheses were supported for men and all but the first for women. Hypotheses based on the greatest total profit and distributive justice models failed to be supported at one point or another in the data. (Author)
