INTERSTITIAL COMPOUNDS OF BORON AND TRANSITION METALS.

Abstract

It has been demonstrated that all of the higher borides can be classified in terms of three simple packing models based on B84 or B12 polyhedral units. The lower borides have also been classified in a similar manner. Among lower borides the structural units are either M2B2 metalboron mixed tetrahedra or all metal tetrahedra. Classification of all lower borides has not been completed and is limited in this report to Fe2B, V3B2 and YB4 structural types. The phases existing in the A1-B-C system have been investigated resulting in two new structural assignments and discovery of a new phase. The discrepancies reported in the alpha boron derivatives have been clarified by studies which demonstrate the existence of multiple stoichiometries within the same structural framework. Various high temperature reactions and, in particular, topotactical transitions in higher borides have been characterized by x-ray diffraction methods. Detailed structure analyses were carried out on C4A1B24, YB12 and YB4. (Author)
