A CRITICAL LOOK AT ULTRASONIC WELDING

Abstract

This technical article reviews the state of the art of ultrasonic welding and discusses some of the advantages and disadvantages of the process. It examines several theories of the nature of the bond; factors affecting the strength of the bond; and the mechanisms and applications of the process. It concludes that although ultrasonic welding appears to be an attractive process, fundamental and applied research is necessary before it will find its special place in the field of joining similar and dissimilar metals.
