DISPERSION OF LOVE WAVES WITH A SINGLELAYER AND DOUBLE-LAYER MODEL OF THE EARTH'S CRUST,

Abstract

Results of experimental investigations of dispersion of Love waves obtained directly from seismogram analysis are used in the study of the earth crust. Interpretation of observed dispersion and speeds is conducted on the basis of comparison of theoretic and experimental dispersing curves. During construction of theoretical dispersion curves it is necessary to proceed from an assumed scheme of the earth crust structure. Without a number of theoretical curves for all the possible variations of the structure of the earth crust a reliable interpretation of experimental data is impossible. On the basis of the results of a number of investigations it has been determined that the structure of the earth crust varies in various sections of the earth. As it has been proved by investigations, schematically the continental crust may be imagined as basically consisting of granitic and basaltic layers. In certain sections of the continental part of the earth the sedimentary layer is of importance in the crust's structure. In some places its thickness reaches ten and more kilometers. During construction of theoretical dispersion curves the earth crust is modeled as a single-layered or double-layered medium located in the space. Each medium is considered to be uniform. Possible variations of elastic medium parameter relations are investigated for such models. (Author)
