MG I LINES IN THE SOLAR SPECTRUM.

Abstract

Some of the results of a recent laboratory investigation of the spectrum of magnesium are presented in the form of a multiplet table giving wavelengths, intensities, excitation potentials, and line classifications for Mg I. Numerous predicted lines are also included in this table. On the basis of these data a search for magnesium lines in the solar spectrum has been carried out. It was found that 219 features in this spectrum can be attributed with certainty either wholly or partly to Mg I; 91 of these identifications are new. Certain line series are observed to higher nvalues in the solar spectrum than in the laboratory. A determination of the mean wavelength displacements for the unblended Mg I lines in the Fraunhofer spectrum yields values ranging from +0.007 A for the wavelength region 3093-6319 in the Revised Rowland Table to +0.12 A for the 12084-24566 wavelength interval described in Mohler's table of solar spectrum wavelengths. The line shifts can not be explained solely in terms of a Doppler- or an Einstein shift. (Author)
