Abstract

The paper presents the development of the plastic artificial cornea under the following headings: Significant history in the development of the plastic artificial cornea (three periods): (a) From 1850 - 1905; (b) From 1905 - 1949; and (c) From 1949 - 1964; The need for the plastic artificial cornea; The major problems and their solutions; Eight basic principles for maintenance of the plastic artificial cornea in the eye; Description of two implants designed, in compliance with the eight basic principles, to provide latitude in the care of complications; and The necessity for continued research with controlled and long term studies.
