CORRELATES OF AMBIVALENCE, RISK-TAKING AND RIGIDITY
Abstract
Problems of assessing ambivalence and risk-taking tendencies, and the exploration of their interrelations within a theoretical framework of decision- making behavior were investigated. An attempt was made to interpret within this framework the demonstrated relationships between ambivalence and risk-taking tendencies and the following variables: perceptual rigidity, intolerance of ambiguity, field dependence, dogmatism, anxiety and socialization experiences during childhood. Ambivalence was demonstrated as a generalized trait and was correlated with punitive parental socialization, with anxiety, field dependence, intolerance of ambiguity and low risk of prestige. Experimentally induced guilt resulted in a decrease of ambivalence. Marked sex differences were found for the relationships of ambivalence with financial risk and with styles and content sensitivities in binocular resolutions.
