SOME NOTES ON THE USE AND DATA PROCESSING ASPECTS OF ASSOCIATION FACTORS IN IS AND R SYSTEMS,

Abstract

A number of methods have been proposed to utilize the statistical properties of pair-occurrences of index terms used to describe documents in a library. The common objective is to increase the number of terms in an original search request by the addition of others 'highly associated' with them. For the study being conducted by UNIVAC a large sample of DDC (formerly ASTIA) documents were used for testing and evaluating some of the several measures of association which have been proposed, and for determining the implications of their use upon the configurations of a data processing system used in an information storage and retrieval application. The formulation of the exact purpose and nature of such tests requires incorporating the use of association factors into the total specifications of an operating IS and R system. A number of the problems connected with attempts to accomplish this are discussed. (Author)
