EXCITED STATE SATURABLE ABSORBER FOR 1.06 MICRON WAVELENGTH.

Abstract

The excited state absorption of a group of twenty glasses that were singly doped with fluorescent ions was investigated as a function of wavelength. Three ions Uo2(2+), Cu(+), and Er(3+) showed a strong effect and these ions were studied more extensively. Energy transfer between Nd(3+), Yb(3+) and Er(3+) was shown to increase the excited state absorption in Er(3+). Excited state saturable absorption was not observed for the 1.06 micron wavelength in either the UO2(2+) or the Cu+ glass. These last experiments were not extensive enough to be conclusive. (Author)
