THE ALGEBRA OF BLOCK DIAGRAMS,

Abstract

Free substitution algebras are defined, and their basic properties are derived using the standard techniques of 'universal' algebra. The theory is applied to give a purely algebraic definition of block diagrams (and/or functional nets). A heuristic demonstration is given showing the identify of the present treatment of diagrams with the more geometric approach via labeled graphs. (Author)
