RESEARCH ON THE METABOLISM OF GLUTATHIONE, GLUTAMINE, AND RELATED COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

Compartmentation of these amino acids and other Krebs cycle intermediates in the brain under normal conditions and in the presence of toxic levels of ammonia was investigated. The importance of carbon dioxide fixation in maintaining physiological levels of the dicarboxylic acids was indicated by these studies. Experiments on the incorporation of C14 labeled CO2 confirmed and extended these findings. Results pointing to the functional significance of CO2 fixation in brain and nerve are presented. Also presented are experiments relating to the specificity and biological function of the enzyme transglutaminase. Other research summarized in this report concerns the structure and metabolism of nucleohistones, RNA polymerase in brain, and various aspects of amino acid and protein metabolism. (Author)
