AVAILABILITY OF SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS IN DEFENSE ORIENTED LIBRARIES

Abstract

The objective was to determine the availability of OAR sponsored research to the Air Force technological community when they are published solely in open journals. The data was obtained through a survey of technical libraries in 199 defense-oriented research establishments. The librarians were asked to mark 'on shelf' each of the 522 journal titles in which OAR research is published. The findings indicate that less than 50 percent of these journals are readily available; that the university libraries are the most likely places for finding these journals; and that defense and industrial libraries are the least likely places to find them. The hypothesis is rejected that the professional journals in which OAR sponsored researchers normally publish are readily available (on-shelf) in defense-oriented libraries.
