PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF A CALIBRATION TECHNIQUE FOR MULTIPLE-ELEMENT ARRAY SYSTEMS.

Abstract

A concept is investigated for the calibration of seismographs which uses spectra of strong teleseismic P waves. This technique has a special application in Large Aperture Seismic Arrays (LASA), where calibration of each instrument individually becomes difficult because of the number of seismometers involved. Signals recorded by standard Benioff short-period seismographs were analyzed by means of an analog spectrum analyzer. The study shows a remarkable agreement between the estimated values of the relative magnification curves and the actually calibrated values for periods greater than 1 sec. For shorter periods, however, the agreement is not good enough for actual application. (Author)
