V-LINE SURFACE WAVE RADIATION AND SCANNING.

Abstract

The feasibility of converting a surface wave propagating structure, the V-line, into an end-fire or broadside radiator is analyzed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. It is shown that the radiation may be considered, under suitable design and launching conditions, to be associated with a higher-order hybrid mode of propagation of the cylindrical dielectric rod. End-fire radiation induced by axial truncation and broadside radiation from a parasitic linear array are predicted and verified. A radiation scanning situation simulating electrical control of beam position by varying the permittivity of the binding element is illustrated and discussed critically. (Author)
