RIPPLE TANK ANALOGS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC SCATTERING BY METALLIC AND DIELECTRIC CYLINDERS.

Abstract

Because of their utility as 'analog computers' for studying the scattering of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, two ripple tanks were built up as part of the equipment used in the Laboratory's basic studies in scattering. These facilities are described in detail and data obtained with them are discussed. Results for two fundamental scatterers, elliptic and triangular dielectric cylinders, are emphasized. (Although the ellipse is a simple shape, and the corresponding perfectly conducting scatterer leads to a separable boundary value problem, the dielectric case is not separable in the usual sense. Similarly, the results for triangular cylinders model some aspects of the unsolved problem of scattering by a dielectric wedge.) Several analogs of scattering by metallic objects (cylinders, gratings, mirrors, etc.) are also considered in order to illustrate the overall utility of the ripple tanks for initial considerations of many practical propagation problems: the design of radar antennas, the analysis of interference patterns for complex arrays, the study of acoustic waves in bounded domains, ets.
