EVALUATION OF BELTS FOR PROTECTION OF FLEXING ELECTRICAL CABLES IN SUBMARINE ANTENNA SYSTEMS,

Abstract

The electrical cables associated with submarine retractable antenna masts must be formed into U-shaped loops at the bottom of the masts to allow the cables to flex as the mast is raised to or lowered from periscope depth. The cables are enclosed in a cable loop belt to protect them against damage. This report describes the mechanical evaluation of a PR-1524 Type 2, a PR-1552 and Buna N Type 6, and a Buna N Type 3 cable loop belt. These belts were tested in a chamber that simulated submarine operation and temperature conditions. The results of these tests and recommendations for acceptable cable belt materials depending on operating conditions are presented. (Author)
